My name is Stephanie Rickert, and I am a 37 year old personal trainer, and mother to a 10 year old boy. Over the years I have met
dozens of moms that have just given birth to a baby, or moms that have been staying home with toddlers and just can’t get themselves to the gym. And it’s always a reason like, “She won’t let me leave her in the babysitting room!”, or “He is always taking a nap when I can finally get out of the house, and then I’m so tired I don’t want to leave the house either.” And believe me, I UNDERSTAND those excuses!!!
Being very naive, I thought that taking weight off after having a baby was going to be a piece of cake. Boy, was I in for a rude awakening! I gained 55lbs while pregnant with my son. And the baby only weighed 8lbs 9oz.
The challenge started with getting a healthy eating schedule secured, and then when I was cleared for exercise, I started walking…and walking…and walking. I did loose 20lbs along with “dieting.” I was still very far from my original 115lb figure, and not even close to feeling good about myself.
I was a gymnast, dancer, and competitive body builder before I had my kid. One day I decided enough, is enough! I was going to get control of this weight, which was causing me so many problems, emotionally, physical, sexually, and spiritually. My life was in crisis. I was feeling lazy, frumpy, cranky, and insecure. I had to get my head in the game. My mother was a body builder and gym owner since I was 15 years old. I knew what to do, and how to accomplish results fast. I knew there would be really good days, and some days would be really bad. I was ready to set out on my journey.
I implemented a regular workout program. I took group classes, kickboxing, and spin. Some of them I enjoyed more than others, but I tried everything as long as I was moving. I trained with weights because muscle burns fat, and I knew this would be the fastest way to obtain my goal. I also implemented a nutritional program; I knew I had to use my food as fuel, and to support the needs of my changing body. I used the idea of food as fuel to help me look, feel, and BE my best for myself, for my family, and for my friends.
I was in a good mood, and in a good place most of the time. I lost 12 more pounds. Then I did the craziest thing of all…I decided I would participate in an amateur body building contest to reach my goal! My goodness! I was both frightened and excited at the same time. Frightened, because I didn’t know what to expect, or if I could do it, and the excited because I could feel the fight and tenacity building and awakening inside me.
I delved deeper into my training program and nutritional program. I was driving everyone around me crazy, but it was important for my son see me doing something important for myself, and succeed at it. By taking action, I was letting my son know how important it was to go after what you want, and don’t stop until you get it. It made me feel good to be organized, important, strong, prepared, and happy. Even though the workouts were grueling, and kept getting harder, my mind had changed… I was seeing myself in a different light – a positive one instead of believing the negative limitations I had set on myself in the previous months.
I did very well in that show, and I looked even better than I did before I was pregnant. I gained so much more than a trophy. I gain my life back and I put forth into the world all the things I knew I was made of! And for that journey I will always be greatful.
